Call to Action: End War in Yemen!

Peace Action calling for support of H.Con.Res.138

From Peace Action’s newsletter:

The War Powers Resolution [we] told you about last week was just introduced in the House. I need you to call your representatives today and ask them to cosponsor and support H.Con.Res 138, the War Powers Resolution on the U.S. role in the war in Yemen. Here’s all you need to do:
1) Call the Capitol Switchboard today at 202-224-3121.

2) Follow instructions to reach your Representative in the House of Representatives, and then say (in your own words to the extent possible):

3) My name is ______________, and I’m a constituent from [YOUR CITY]. I’m calling to urge Representative ____________ to cosponsor H.Con.Res 138, the War Powers Resolution on the U.S. role in the war in Yemen. It is time for Congress to take back its constitutional authority in authorizing U.S. wars. Please, co-sponsor the War Powers Resolution to end the U.S. role in the war in Yemen.

Thanks for all you’ve done to help end the suffering in Yemen.

Call to Action! Hold the LYNE

Protesting the development of “Low-Yield” Nuclear Warheads

The latest campaign from Peace Action asks you to call your representatives (in Congress and the Senate)  to support the Hold the LYNE Act:

Congress included money for so-called “low-yield” nuclear weapons in the 2019 Pentagon budget. While these weapons make for smaller explosions than most in the U.S. nuclear arsenal, make no mistake – they are still powerful enough to level a city.
House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Congressman Adam Smith (D-WA), Congresspersons Ted W. Lieu (D-CA), John Garamendi (D-CA), Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), and Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) recently introduced the bicameral Hold the LYNE—or Low-Yield Nuclear Explosive—Act.
This critical new legislation would prohibit the research, development, production, and deployment of low-yield nuclear warheads for submarine-launched ballistic missiles. In order for this bill to succeed, we need to generate as many co-sponsors for it as possible.
Supporter, that’s where I need your help. Call your members of Congress today and urge them to support the Hold the LYNE Act.
1) Call the Capitol Switchboard today at 202-224-3121.

2) Follow instructions to reach your Representative in the House of Representatives, and then say (in your own words to the extent possible):

3) My name is ______________, and I’m a constituent from [YOUR CITY]. I’m calling to urge Representative/Senator ____________ to cosponsor the Hold the LYNE Act (House bill H.R. 6840, Senate bill S. 3448), introduced by Reps Lieu, Smith, Blumenauer, and Garamendi in the House, and Sen. Markey in the Senate. It is far too dangerous to hand over new nuclear weapons that the president will likely deem “safer” and “more usable.” Introducing new “low-yield” nuclear weapons lowers the threshold for nuclear use, endangering the United States by inviting a new nuclear arms race and increasing the risk of a full-scale nuclear conflict. I urge you to cosponsor and support The Hold the LYNE act.
4) Call back, and repeat the process for your two senators.
In the words of Dr. George Shultz, Secretary of State under Ronald Reagan, “The idea of a low-yield nuclear weapon is kind of a mirage. It is a nuclear weapon… it invites escalation.”

Call to Action

Time to phone your congressperson!

This morning (Sept 13th), Peace Action is asking for concerned citizens to get in contact with their congressional representative to urge opposition to military intervention in Syria.

From their newsletter:

1) Please call the Capitol Switchboard today at 202-224-3121.

2) Follow instructions to reach your Representative in the House of Representatives, and then say (in your own words to the extent possible):

3) My name is ______________, and I’m a constituent from [YOUR CITY]. I’m calling to urge Representative ____________ to oppose President Trump’s threatened military strikes on Syria, which would be unconstitutional. I urge them to sign the bipartisan letter being circulated by Reps Barbara Lee and Walter Jones that asserts Congress’s exclusive power to authorize war. I also urge Rep _______________ to speak out against U.S. military intervention and in favor of the U.N.’s diplomatic efforts to address the crisis.

Any US intervention into Syria’s civil war would be in violation of U.S. and international law without authorization from Congress and the United Nations. We can’t enforce the international norm against chemical weapons use by flagrantly violating the international norm against unauthorized military interventions.

Reps Lee and Jones have been consistently good on this issue, working across the aisles to get people on board, but they need your voice to help push it past the goal line.
